Roof care in Bellingham and Whatcom County

Roofs under trees need a yearly look

Moss, fir needles and clogged gutters wear a roof down quietly. We clean, treat and mend roofs on a schedule, and we send you a reminder every October so you never have to remember.

  • Photos and a written note after every visit
  • Repair prices in writing before work
  • A reminder each October

These are intervals, not prices. A roof past its middle years gets looked at more often, and the plan puts every interval on a calendar.

Your roof’s year

One year with us, in order

The plan is a calendar more than a service. Each season has one job, and we tell you which before the crew arrives.

  • October: your reminder

We text or email you. Reply yes and we book the fall visit for the next dry week.

  • Fall: gutters and the yearly look

Leaves are down and the rain is coming. We clear the gutters, look at the roof from the ladder and the attic, and send photos with a written note.

  • Winter: you call if something drips

A drip, a stain or a loose flashing gets a repair visit in the first dry window. We tell you what we can do from the ladder and what has to wait for the roof to dry.

  • Spring: moss and gutters again

Spring and fall are the best seasons for moss work in our rain. Moss that is wet and soft comes off gently, and the treatment takes.

  • Summer: the dry window

Repairs that need dry weather and the occasional new roof go on from July to September, when shingles seal and the deck stays dry.

No-moss warranty

If moss comes back, so do we

When we clean and treat a roof for moss, the warranty is written on the invoice. Here it is in plain words.

It is our workmanship warranty, separate from the shingle maker’s, and it is not insurance.

The terms

  • Moss regrows on a surface we treated, within 12 months: we come back and treat it again at our cost.

  • It applies when the gutters run and the limbs are trimmed back as we noted on the invoice.

  • It does not cover slopes we did not treat, algae streaks, worn shingles, leaks or storm damage.

  • The terms, and the 12 months, are written on every treatment invoice.

What we do

Care first, repairs second, a new roof last

Most visits end with a note and no work order. When there is work, you get the price in writing before anyone climbs up.

  • The yearly look

The roof from the ladder and the attic, with photos and a note you can keep.

    About the visit
  • Moss cleaning and treatment

Gentle brushing, then a treatment that slows regrowth. We name the product before we use it.

    Moss and the warranty
  • Gutters and downspouts

Cleared twice a year on a tree lot, with a photo of the worst elbow.

    See the plan
  • Small repairs

Lifted shingles, bad flashing, exposed nails and drips, each quoted before it is done.

    About repairs
  • Zinc strips

A strip under the ridge shingles slows moss for years. We check them at each treatment.

    All services
  • When it is time for a new roof

We say so with photos, and tell you how long the roof has left. Then you decide.

Who comes to your house

Vesna Nilsson walks every new roof herself

Vesna started Nilsson Roof Care in 1991 and still does the first visit. She writes the note, and her number is at the bottom of it.

The crew of eight splits into a care team, who do the gutters and moss, and roofers, who do the repairs and the occasional new roof. Everyone who goes up wears a harness tied to an anchor.

What neighbors say about the yearly look

“Three firs drop needles on our north slope. Vesna’s crew showed me the October photos: gutters, one lifted flashing, no moss yet. The note was two paragraphs and I understood both.”

Heinz R.Homeowner, Fairhaven

“I had been told twice to replace the roof. They cleaned the moss, swapped a few shakes and put the next visit on a calendar. That was three springs ago.”

Dionysia P.Homeowner, Sudden Valley

“The reminder text came in October, I replied yes, and a crew was here the next dry week. The photo of my downspout elbow packed with needles settled it.”

Hye K.Homeowner, Lynden

Questions we hear in October

Do I need a roofer if I do not see a leak?

Not always. Moss, clogged gutters and lifted flashing are cheaper to deal with before water finds a way in. A yearly look tells you which of those your roof has.

Do you pressure wash my roof?

No. Pressure washing can strip the granules off asphalt shingles and push water under them. We brush the moss off gently and treat what is left.

What goes on my roof?

We tell you the product name before we use it and put its data sheet in your note. If you have questions about plants, pets or a rain barrel, ask us then.

How long does a roof last under trees?

Asphalt shingles commonly last 20 to 30 years, cedar 25 to 50 and metal 40 to 70. Shade and moss can shorten that, which is why we look every year.

What does the care plan cost?

The sample plans start from an annual price on the plan page. Your price is set after the first visit and written down before you agree. It is not insurance.

Can I cancel the plan?

Yes. Tell us before your next October reminder and you are not charged again. The plan page has the terms.
